If one person can make such a difference, imagine what impact an entire company can have, in fact, we have recently seen an emergence of ‘green companies’ all over the world. We are proud to say that Vital Health Foods is one of those companies in South Africa that are ‘going for green’.

So what exactly does the term ‘green company’ mean and in what ways does Vital Health Foods ensure that its general practices are eco-friendly? Peter Tremlett, the Engineering Manager at Vital Health Foods, provided a wealth of information in a recent interview with the Vital Club Magazine.

How is Vital going forward to maintain the GREEN STATUS? 

Water conservation

Waste Water recovery tanks (5000litre capacity) installed to store waste water from water purification plant, this water is used for steam cleaning.

Recycle cooling water for our Vacuum pumps.
Cooling water used to go through the pumps to the drain as the water builds up heat when circulated.
Cooling coils have been installed in an experimental installation and is working well, enabling us to have a closed system with no water going to waste.

We will be investigating waterless Urinals in the near future.

Energy conservation

We recover waste heat from our Air compressor, the waste heat is used to heat water for the Factory. The heated water is piped through radiators in systems where air needs to be heated such as the Glatt Fluid Bed Dryer and the Tablet Coating Pan.

We have installed a system that improves the quality of our electricity and keeps the Power Factor, Voltages, Load balance and Harmonics etcetera at optimum levels which conserves electricity and improves the life span of electrical equipment.
Although used extensively overseas this system is unique in South Africa.
