VITAL BEAUTY GUIDE
STEP 1: Understand the lingo
Free radicals and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS): Molecules that cause large chain chemical reactions in your body because they react so easily with other molecules. These reactions are called oxidation.
Good oxidation: Free radicals and ROS are produced in our bodies every day during normal activities, including essential energy metabolism, exercise and as part of our immune system’s defense against pathogens.
Bad oxidation: We are also exposed to free radicals from the environment. Toxic chemicals, cigarette smoke, char-grilled foods, oxidised fats and excess sun exposure all increase free radical levels and push the balance of oxidation reactions towards a state of oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress and the resultant damage to cells causes sickness and contributes to the skin ageing and inflammation. .
Premature signs of ageing: Oxidative stress damages collagen and elastin fibers in your skin, affecting both hydration and skin elasticity and contributing to signs of ageing like fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
Pigmentation: Reactive oxygen species can stimulate the production of melanin in the skin, leading to hyperpigmentation – the development of dark spots or age spots.
Inflammation: Free radicals can cause inflammatory responses in the skin, contributing to redness and irritation.
A healthy body has innate antioxidant mechanisms in place to neutralise excess free radicals, but daily intake of essential antioxidants from foods and supplements is needed to protect against the negative effects of oxidative stress.
